  • ENVIRONMENT

    World-class environmental practices
The integrated Saillat plant produces 85% of its energy through biomass: the by-products from its manufacture of paper pulp (bark, black liquor, etc.). This material is burned as fuel to produce heat and electricity.

The raw materials for the plant (branches and tree crowns - trunks are used for furniture, parquet flooring and building material) come from local forests within a radius of 150 km. This reduces the carbon footprint related to transport.
Since 1990, emissions from the Saillat plant have fallen by 63%, greatly surpassing the average of 27% imposed by CEPI, as well as the Kyoto Protocol, which sets the emissions reduction at 8%.

Following a three-year impact study by the French chambers of agriculture, in 2001 the Saillat plant began a partnership with local farmers to provide mill ashes for fertiliser. Every year, 9,000 tonnes of ash are given free of charge to 89 nearby farmers who spread it over 700 hectares. The limestone and potash contained in the ash improve the quality of the soil. This initiative has also served to reduce the amount of waste at the Saillat plant by 60%.

Greenhouse gas emissions audit: Performed according to French Decree 2011-829 dated 11 July 2011 relating to the procedures for greenhouse gas emissions audits and for local climate and energy plans.

INTERNATIONAL  PAPER  KWIDZYN

The Kwidzyn mill (operating as IP-Kwidzyn Sp. z o. o.) has been part of International Paper since 1992. The mill was established on July 17, 1972 when the Polish Minister of Forestry and Wood Industry signed a resolution to create a state enterprise named “Pulp and Paper Mill under Construction” to be located in Kwidzyn.
The economic transformation in Poland during the 1980ies and 1990ies was manifested by the rapid recession on the paper market and the mill’s further existence could only be secured by seeking access to considerable investment capital through privatization. In a first step, the mill was transformed into a single shareholder company of the State Treasury on January 1, 1991.
After some negotiations, on August 10, 1992, International Paper bought 80 % of the shares of the Kwidzyn pulp and paper mill. Following a buy out of the remaining 20 % of shares from employees and State Treasury, International Paper Corporation then owned 100% of the mill’s shares. In 1994, the mill assumed its new name - International Paper-Kwidzyn.
Shortly after the acquisition of the Kwidzyn mill, International Paper launched a major modernization program aimed at output increase and quality improvement to allow the mill to compete on Western European markets. The objectives of the modernization program were fully achieved: Production output doubled and production quality meets Western standards.

As a result of the mill’s commitment to continuous improvement, the following successes were achieved:
decrease of technological water consumption index by 13 %,
decrease of solids charges index and COD in sewage by 88% and 24% respectively,
decrease of nitric oxide emission by about 27%,
elimination of chlorine application for pulp bleaching and water disinfection that eliminates the potential risk resulting from the transportation, storage and application of that harzardous substance, re-use of ashes from the dry coal boilers in the building industry instead of disposal in a landfill.
